The Massachusetts Berkshires

We made our first “on the fly” itinerary change when we left our site in Hershey, PA a week early to set up camp near Auntie in the Berks. Kimberly and I have been up there on many occasions but not since COVID and not since the Ashman’s sold their house in Great Barrington. Originally we thought we might just drive in the TOAD 5 hours to spend a few nights and drive back to pack up camp and stay on schedule. But after research, I found one RV spot in beautiful Pittsfield, MA near lake Pontoosuc in the heart of the Berks. Bonnie Brae Campground was the spot. A seasonal camper had just pulled out of the spot on a Friday and we parked Yolo there Monday-Sunday.

I think this was our 10th stop since leaving so you’d think we’d have this down to a science by now, but no. For the 10th time we didn’t use our walkie talkies when backing into our spot. It’s rare that we land exactly where we want to land because of this. We get “close” enough. So here we are, backing in after a long drive, and aiming for a really nice deck that is on our site. Bonus! A deck! Problem is without our walkie talkies I don’t know that I’m getting too close AND that the deck has a nail sticking straight out of it. So we had our first flat tire. All I can say is that if you have a flat in an RV, the best place to have it is when you’re parked. Took care of it the next morning and then drove the TOAD to Aunties.

Stephen and Auntie took us out for a fabulous meal and I spent my very first night in a real house with multiple bedrooms and floors and all the luxuries you can imagine since June. It was weird and I couldn’t sleep and the next day I fell down the stairs…so there’s  that.
We did some favorite things in the Berks. I ate my favorite bread from my favorite bakery (cherry pecan from Berkshire Bakery), we went shopping at our favorite clothes place and had ice cream at SoCo with Auntie. Cassandra and Josuel came for a few nights which was really nice. I got to cook in a big kitchen and feed family. I don’t know why I love that so much, but I do. Shopping and cooking and feeding my family gives me such joy and pleasure. We had such a great time! Cassandra and Josuel had not met Mollie so it was nice to see them together.

Kimberly and I returned to camp on Saturday and took a 3 mile walk around the lake followed by lobster rolls on the patio at Lakeside Grill. We got a good rest and Yolo and the Toad plus Mollie and us pulled out by 0800 for a one night stop near Allentown, PA. Followed by a second day of driving to get back to our original itinerary. The one night was perfect. We never even unhitched the TOAD. We just ate leftovers from our abundant weekend and slept. Now I am at Ryerson Station State Park in Wind Ridge, PA. while Kimberly is in Alabama traveling for work. There is zero internet so I am currently sitting a few miles from our campground enjoying a 3 bar signal, lol. Enjoy the Berkshire pictures and you’ll see a completely different scene on the next post from the middle of nowhere.
