The middle of nowhere and completely offline: Ryerson Station State Park in Wood Ridge, PA.

We try to split up our stays between State Parks and Private Parks for the most part. When I choose spots, I try to be within an hour of a hub airport so Kimberly can travel, and near enough to “stuff” I can do by bike. Sometimes, but rarely, I take her to the airport on Mondays and pick her up on Fridays. Ryerson was 1.5 hours from the Pittsburg airport with 40/50 minutes of driving on back mountain roads. At the park itself there was rarely one bar of cell signal and never a WiFi signal. There was no laundry, horseshoes, camp store, or game room, but that was completely outdone by beauty, silence, wildlife and mountain air. After Kimberly left for work for the week, Mollie and I hiked many miles, collected wood and made many fires. I finished a book and started a book and rode my vroom vroom on some wild and chilly rides.

What I loved was the pure rawness of the week. I lived in the woods with maybe 4 other campers all week. It was totally silent except for nature sounds and the occasional visit from the Park Ranger or his staff. I felt totally safe and the only scary part was my 2 VERY steep bike rides where I literally watched my life events flash before my eyes. Yes I had a helmet on but I still could have died!

I was very thankful that Kimberly and I found the local burger shop and some groceries the day before she flew out…but I would not have starved.
By far the most difficult driving to date. In PA they bore tunnels through mountains and then we drive through them like it’s no big deal. In a 15,000 pound RV, pulling a vehicle, with our entire life in it, was scary. We also drove over one lane bridges and on dirt roads a lot on the way to Ryerson Station State Park. And a week later, we drove the rig back down that mountain. Had I known about the drive to the park, I may not have chosen this perfect spot.

Winter blankets and sweatshirts came out for this stop and I loved that. We are now in Frankfort, KY and it’s not nearly as chilly but definitely not Florida hot.Enjoy the pics from the middle of nowhere.
