Beaumont Texas for a Week

We were certainly asked more than once why Beaumont? The simple truth is: it was halfway to Austin. So we took a maintenance week to get stuff done…and NOT be on vacation at some party spot USA. With Austin scheduled through the end of the year, we needed Beaumont for a week.

We actually walked several miles everyday and ate home cooked meals at the campsite. We only ate out once and it was excellent Tex Mex, which is a must while in Texas.
We found a mobile mechanic that changed the oil in YOLO while we were set up. After over 4100 miles since we left 6 months ago, it was time. And so convenient! We also found a groomer for Mollie girl. So she got the 3 “F’s”…face, feet and fanny and was fluffy with bows for a hot minute.

We actually did a Walmart trip while in Beaumont. We even got our little tabletop, fiber optic Christmas tree! Most importantly, we stocked up on the usual Walmart stuff and it was a fairly painless experience.

One of the most accomplished feelings ever is when we took the time to reorganize our “closets” for the changing seasons. We even reorganized some cabinet space and made our cozy little Yolo even cozier. We changed out the bedding and pulled out the right blankets and throws and pillows and it’s perfect for all 3 of us.

And who knew Beaumont is the museum capital of Texas? We went to the Fire Museum of Texas.

The Fire Museum of Texas is located in a former fire station, the former Central Fire Station, in Beaumont, Texas, built in 1927. The building is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark,[1] and is an example of the Renaissance Revival. The building houses state-of-the-art interactive fire safety exhibits with a collection of antique fire equipment dating as early as 1856. It also has a two-story interactive playhouse for children to learn fire safety. Another feature is that “…the world’s largest working fire hydrant…”,[2] a towering twenty-four (24) feet tall, is in front of the building. In addition to the fire hydrant, the museum features the State of Texas Firefighter Memorial, a 9-11 Memorial, and a Firefighter commemorative walkway.

Permanent exhibits trace history of fire fighting from bucket brigades to present practices. Several antique trucks are featured dating from 1856. Temporary exhibits can also be found at the museum.

Beaumont was a perfect stop at the perfect time. A week to regroup and prepare ourselves for the holiday season. We likely will never be back in Beaumont, but I’m glad we can say we’ve been there.

See you in Austin!
